Thinking Man’s Chair by Jasper Morrison. Ed. Cappellini
Designed in the mid-1980s, this chair is one of Jasper Morrison’s earliest and most defining pieces. Made entirely of metal, it reflects a radical approach: removing all unnecessary surfaces to retain only structure, almost architectural in its intent. The line is fluid and continuous, formed by an interplay of tubular elements and flat metal slats. The seat, composed of parallel strips, gently adapts to the body, while the open back enhances the visual lightness of the piece. The sinuous armrests extend into two small circular platforms, originally conceived as supports for a drink or ashtray, adding a subtle functional layer. Both experimental and immediately legible, the chair already embodies Morrison’s philosophy: a design reduced to essentials, where every element serves a purpose without decorative intent. A seminal piece, at the intersection of furniture and concept, now considered an icon of contemporary design.
