Seiz Breur Bench Attributed to Joseph Savina – France, 1940

This sculptural solid oak bench perfectly illustrates the modernist regionalist aesthetic developed by the Seiz Breur movement in Brittany during the 1930s and 1940s. Its architectural design, robust proportions, and deeply carved geometric motifs reflect a remarkable synthesis between traditional Breton craftsmanship and Art Deco modernism. The backrest features an exceptional composition of concentric circles and stylized motifs, characteristic of the decorative vocabulary associated with Joseph Savina and the artists surrounding the Seiz Breur movement. The curved armrests provide an elegant contrast to the almost monolithic rigor of the structure. Crafted from dark oak beautifully patinated by time, the bench possesses a presence that is at once primitive, monumental, and deeply decorative. Through the graphic strength of its carvings and the sobriety of its lines, it recalls some of the most emblematic creations of 20th-century Breton modernist furniture. A rare and highly decorative piece, situated at the crossroads of Breton folk art, Art Deco, and French regionalist modernism.
