Regionalist Art Deco Side Table – France, 1940

This oak side table, made in France around 1940, exemplifies the Regionalist strain of French Art Deco through its raw materiality and sculptural presence. The thick circular top, assembled from solid planks, bears visible joints, wear, and fissures that testify to age, use, and honest craftsmanship. The robust central column is powerfully turned, resting on a tripod base with large spherical feet. This architectural construction gives the table a grounded, almost totemic quality, balancing mass and rhythm with remarkable confidence. Such tables are often attributed to Charles Dudouyt, whose work embraced vernacular forms, traditional woodworking, and expressive volumes, standing apart from more polished Art Deco idioms.
