Prestige Directional Desk by Joseph-André Motte. Ed. Dassas

A defining example of French post-war design thinking applied to the executive interior, the Prestige Directional Desk by Joseph-André Motte was conceived in 1962 for Dassas. Imbued with the intellectual clarity and functional rigor characteristic of Motte’s work, this monumental desk brings together refined materials and a disciplined modern silhouette. The structure plays on a precise dialogue between warm veneer and gleaming chromed metal. A broad rectangular top, punctuated by a discreet inset writing surface in dark leather, spans laterally between two balanced support volumes. These house practical storage elements while preserving the desk’s strong horizontal emphasis. The chromed steel frame draws a crisp architectural outline around the desktop, articulating its edges with precision and subtly elevating the natural grain of the wood. Conceived at a generous scale appropriate to its “directional” function, the desk was designed for leadership, expressed through proportion and material rather than ornament. Its rigorous geometry, clarity of construction, and careful balance between solidity and lightness reflect the ideals of French Modernism in the early 1960s. Within Joseph-André Motte’s broader body of work, known for its synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary industrial methods, this desk stands as a mature and confident statement. It embodies a vision of executive furniture that is both functional and composed, combining comfort, prestige, and a restrained elegance that remains strikingly contemporary today.
