Oak T01B Table by Pierre Chapo

This T01B oak table, designed in the early 1960s by Pierre Chapo, belongs to the very beginning of Chapo’s work, when his personal language first emerged. Conceived as a dining table, it is defined by its balanced proportions and a calm, grounded presence, already revealing the designer’s commitment to structural clarity and material honesty. The rectangular top, assembled from wide solid oak planks, displays a warm grain and a naturally softened patina. Gently rounded edges and visible joinery speak to a demanding level of craftsmanship, allowing the wood to express itself without ornament or disguise. The base, formed by straight vertical legs connected by low stretchers, provides both stability and a restrained architectural rhythm. Viewed from all angles, the table reads as both a functional object and a sculptural form. It reflects Chapo’s early ambition to unite durability, simplicity, and expressive construction—principles that would go on to define his entire body of work and establish his place within postwar French modern design.
