Oak Sideboard by Charles Dudouyt. Ed. La Gentilhommière

This oak sideboard, hot-iron signed by Charles Dudouyt and edited by La Gentilhommière, demonstrates with clarity the vocabulary of French regionalist modernism from the 1930s–1940s. Its elongated, horizontal silhouette combined with powerful proportions gives the piece a strong architectural presence, firmly rooted in solidity and function. The composition is organized around a pair of sculpted central doors that form the visual focal point. Their deeply carved geometric relief—rhythmic and tactile—is characteristic of Dudouyt’s formal language. The fluted side doors and substantial wooden handles extend this restrained decorative approach, balancing ornament with structural legibility. Crafted entirely from solid oak, the sideboard reveals a high level of workmanship through the thickness of its panels, precise joinery, and stepped base. Both functional and sculptural, it reflects Dudouyt’s pursuit of a synthesis between artisanal tradition, monumentality, and measured decorative modernity.
