Folk Art Cabinet - France, 19th Century

This folk art cabinet from the French Alps, dating to the 19th century, is a sober and expressive example of vernacular mountain furniture. Built in solid wood, its compact, architectural form is defined by thick uprights and a low open recess, likely intended for storage of everyday objects or tools. The two paneled doors are fitted with original wrought-iron strap hinges and hand-forged latches, whose dark patina contrasts with the warm, time-worn surface of the wood. Inside, simple fixed shelves reflect a utilitarian logic, while the visible wear, tool marks, and repairs bear witness to long domestic use.
