Ceramic Sphere Vase by Francis Jourdain

This ceramic vessel is a refined example of Francis Jourdain’s work in France around 1920, a period in which he pursued a sober, functional modernism rooted in clarity of form and material honesty. The rounded volume and restrained profile reflect Jourdain’s rejection of ornament in favor of balanced proportions and quiet presence. Thrown with a generous spherical body and a short, subtly flared neck, the piece is animated by horizontal cobalt-blue bands that structure the surface without overwhelming it. The softly crackled glaze, in warm ochre and beige tones, reveals nuanced variations from firing, giving depth and tactility to the form. The underside bears a handwritten inscription, attesting to its artisanal origin. Both utilitarian and sculptural, this ceramic embodies the humanist modern spirit that defines Francis Jourdain’s contribution to French decorative arts of the interwar period.
