Art Deco Armchairs From the 1930s

This pair of Art Deco armchairs exemplifies the refined sobriety and structural clarity characteristic of French seating from the late 1930s. The overall composition is defined by a carefully balanced dialogue between upholstery and wood, where form follows use without renouncing elegance. Seen from the front and in three-quarter view, the armchairs present generous, softly contoured volumes. The seats are wide and welcoming, while the slightly reclined backrests offer a natural, relaxed posture. The upholstered surfaces are edged with discreet piping that precisely follows the silhouette, emphasizing the purity of the lines without excess ornament. The wooden structure, visible at the arms, legs, and upper back, is crafted with particular attention to proportion and detail. The armrests form an open, architectural gesture, lightening the profile while reinforcing the visual rhythm of the piece. Subtle carved scrolls at the upper terminations introduce a restrained decorative note, typical of a late Art Deco vocabulary that tempers classic references with modern restraint. The gently curved legs anchor the armchairs firmly while maintaining a sense of movement and lightness. The pair has been completely reupholstered in a velvet mohair fabric by Pierre Frey. The textile’s dense yet luminous texture enhances the sculptural quality of the forms, while its soft, natural tone harmonizes with the warm patina of the wood. The result is a coherent and timeless ensemble, where craftsmanship, comfort, and material intelligence are brought into quiet balance.
