Armchairs in the Manner of Maurice Dufrène

This set of two French armchairs from circa 1925 offers a refined illustration of the decorative arts vocabulary that emerged in France, closely aligned with the spirit associated with Maurice Dufrène and his contemporaries. The design balances elegance and structure, favoring controlled curves and carefully measured proportions over overt ornament. The armchairs are built around a solid wood frame, whose warm tone is left visible and used as a defining graphic element. The legs are subtly curved and slightly splayed, giving the seats a stable yet light stance. The armrests extend fluidly from the front legs and rise toward the backrest in a continuous, sculptural line, creating a strong sense of enclosure and comfort. From the side and rear views, the silhouette reveals a distinctive swept profile, with gently rounded back panels that soften the overall geometry while maintaining architectural clarity. The upholstery panels are neatly framed within the wooden structure, emphasizing the dialogue between textile surface and wood. The current fabric highlights the generous volumes of the seat and backrest, underscoring the armchairs’ inviting character without compromising their formal restraint. These armchairs exemplify the transition toward a modernized classicism characteristic of French decorative arts in the mid-1920s, where craftsmanship, comfort, and visual harmony were paramount. Our workshop can fully take care of reupholstery in-house, offering a selection of high-end fabrics and finishes tailored to the client’s taste, while respecting the original proportions and spirit of the pieces.
