Aluminium Chairs by Pierre Guariche. Ed. Steiner
This aluminium chairs is a clear expression of Pierre Guariche’s early design language, developed at a moment when French designers were rethinking furniture through the lens of industry, lightness, and modern living. Conceived around 1950 and produced by Steiner, these chairs belong to Guariche’s first experiments with metal seating, anticipating the rational and elegant vocabulary that would later define his mature work. The seats are formed from casted aluminium, sculpted into a continuous, enveloping shell. Their fluid, asymmetrical profile creates a subtle balance between comfort and visual tension, while the oval opening in the backrest introduces both lightness and a functional grip, reinforcing the chair’s practical intent. The surface retains a softly textured, almost mineral patina, revealing traces of fabrication and use that underscore the honesty of the material. The shells rest on slender black lacquered metal legs, slightly splayed, giving the chairs a poised and stable stance. This contrast between the silvery aluminium and the dark steel structure highlights Guariche’s interest in clear structural legibility and restrained material dialogue. These chairs stand as an important testament to the experimental spirit of French design in the early 1950s, when furniture became a field for innovation rather than ornament. Both sculptural and utilitarian, they embody a modern ideal where form follows use with intelligence and restraint. Price is per chair.
